Three workshops on greening taxes and subsidies in the Pacific

In November, IEEP and our project partner the Australian National University will lead three regional workshops to discuss how taxes and subsidies in the Pacific islands can be made greener and help to achieve environmental objectives.

The workshops are taking place as part of the study ‘Towards greener taxes and subsidies in Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs)’, which we are undertaking for the Pacific Community (SPC).

Our study fits into the context of the wider RESCCUE (Restoration of Ecosystem Services and Adaptation to Climate Change) project. RESCCUE is implemented by the SPC and aims to contribute to increasing the resilience of PICTs in the context of global changes. The project is funded primarily by the French Development Agency (AFD) and the French Global Environment Facility (FFEM).

The workshops will bring together local experts from a range of stakeholders to discuss existing harmful instruments, past and ongoing reforms, and potential additional areas for future reforms, with reference to a series of economic sectors: mining, fisheries, agriculture, transport, waste management, water management, urban development, tourism and energy.

Each workshop will have a particular focus on the PICT in which it is held, but experiences from the wider Pacific island region will also be shared. The workshops will be held in:

  • Papeete (French Polynesia) on 14 November 2017
  • Port Vila (Vanuatu) on 17 November 2017
  • Suva (Fiji) on 24 November 2017

The agendas for the workshops can be downloaded from this page.
