All of us at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) mourn the passing of our longtime friend Martin Feldstein, who served on the AEI Council of Academic Advisers for many years, and who received, in 2011, AEI’s highest honor, the Irving Kristol Award. Dr. Feldstein served as President Ronald Reagan’s chief economist and was chairman of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers at the White House from 1982 to 1984. He had a long, distinguished career at Harvard, where he was a professor of economics, and for nearly 30 years, he was the president of the National Bureau of Economic Research. “Marty was a wonderful member of our community and a wise mentor to our economists and analysts,” said Michael R. Strain, AEI’s director of economic policy studies. “He was that rare economist who could publish important, original academic research while also having a real impact on public policy. Even before I had the benefit of knowing him, Marty was an example of how an economist can productively engage in the public debate. He was an intellectual giant, easily one of the most influential economists of the past half century. All of us in AEI’s economics department thought of Marty as a teacher; we learned so much from him.” Arthur C. Brooks, president of AEI, said he “was proud to call Marty a friend for years.” He continued, “When I decided to come to AEI, Marty’s longtime involvement in our community helped me realize that I was being asked to lead an organization that has been at the heart of America’s economic policymaking. I have relied on Marty’s advice and counsel during my 10 years as president. His passing is a huge loss to the AEI community. Our gatherings and discussions won’t be the same without him.” Said incoming AEI President Robert Doar, “For a long time now, I have admired Marty Feldstein’s contributions to US public policy. He served as a great economist and intellectual. All of us at AEI are going to miss his wise counsel.” All of us at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) mourn the passing of our longtime friend Martin Feldstein, who served on the AEI Council of Academic Advisers for many years, and who received, in 2011, AEI’s highest honor, the Irving Kristol Award.
