Dear colleagues, It is with great pleasure that we introduce three new members of the Economic Policy Studies team: visiting scholar Eric J. Belasco, who is working on farm subsidy programs such as crop insurance and disaster aid; research fellow Benedic N. Ippolito, who is focusing on the economics of health care policy, in particular the behavior of health care providers; and visiting scholar Lawrence Mead, who is working on social welfare programs. Visiting scholar Eric J. Belasco (eric.belasco@aei.org) is concurrently an associate professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Economics at Montana State University. Previously, he was an assistant professor at Texas Tech University and a research associate at the Duke Center for Clinical Health Policy Research. Dr. Belasco has a Ph.D. and an M.S. in economics from North Carolina State University and a B.A. in economics from Saint Mary’s College of California. AEI research fellow Benedic Ippolito’s (benedic.ippolito@aei.org) research will focus on the economics of health care policy, with a special focus on the behavior of health care providers. He has been investigating how changes in financial incentives influence hospital care and how alternative compensation models influence the behavior of physicians and the way they treat patients. Dr. Ippolito has a Ph.D. and an M.S. in economics from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and a B.A. in economics and mathematics from Emory University. Known as one of the theoretical architects of welfare reform in the 1990s, Lawrence Mead (lawrence.mead@aei.org) is a professor of politics and public policy at New York University. He is the author of several influential books in which he demonstrates that mandatory work requirements are essential to sound welfare policy. In his latest book, “Expanding Work Programs for Poor Men” (AEI Press, 2011), Dr. Mead explains that poor fathers, like welfare mothers, not only need better benefits but also must be expected and required to work regularly. His other books include “From Prophecy to Charity: How to Help the Poor” (AEI Press, 2011), “Welfare Reform and Political Theory” (Russell Sage Foundation, 2005), “Beyond Entitlement: The Social Obligations of Citizenship” (The Free Press, 2001), “The New Paternalism: Supervisory Approaches to Poverty” (Brookings, 1997), and “The New Politics of Poverty: The Nonworking Poor in America” (Basic Books, 1992). Dr. Mead has an M.A. and a Ph.D. in political science from Harvard University and a B.A. in political science from Amherst College.
