Washington, DC (March 11, 2017) — President Donald Trump has named American Enterprise Institute (AEI) Resident Fellow Scott Gottlieb, M.D., as his choice for Food and Drug Administration (FDA) commissioner. His appointment is subject to Senate confirmation. Dr. Gottlieb first joined AEI in 2002, conducting research and frequently testifying before Congress on various aspects of federal health care policies, including issues related to health care regulation, and the interface of federal policy and the practice of medicine. Much of his work has focused on expanding policy and regulatory approaches that preserve physician and patient autonomy and advancing the public health through medical innovation and entrepreneurship.
“Scott’s impressive career as a physician and policy expert demonstrates a career-long commitment to public health,” said AEI president Arthur Brooks. “He understands the FDA’s vital role in assuring public safety while allowing patients to benefit from cutting-edge medical discoveries. Americans are lucky that Scott will be serving our country in this role.”
In between his appointments at AEI, Dr. Gottlieb held various senior roles at the FDA and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the last as the FDA’s deputy commissioner for medical and scientific affairs from 2005 to 2007. He is currently a clinical assistant professor at New York University School of Medicine and advises the US Department of Health and Human Services as a member of the Federal Health IT Policy Committee. He was a practicing physician and hospitalist for many years and has advised health care entrepreneurs.
