At 9 p.m. on Tuesday, January 30, President Donald Trump will deliver his first State of the Union address. Calling it an address “from the heart,” he is expected to address several policy areas:
Jobs and the economy: The president is expected to discuss the effects of the recently-passed tax reform bill and deregulation efforts, as well as the general state of the US economy and stock market.
Infrastructure reform: Trump campaigned on a $1 trillion infrastructure plan, and there have been reports that infrastructure reform will be next on the White House’s agenda.
Opioid crisis: The president is expect to touch on the opioid epidemic, which continues to impact communities throughout the nation, both from a treatment and an economic standpoint.
General politics:
Trade: Trump has expressed interest in seeking more fair and reciprocal policies between the US and its trade partners. He recently said he would reconsider TPP and NAFTA, but only if the US could renegotiate its position.
National security: Trump is expected to discuss various national security issues including rebuilding the military, defining which nations are allies and which are adversaries, and illustrating how the US will respond to threats posed by North Korea and terrorist groups.
