FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Washington, DC (September 13, 2018) — American Enterprise Institute (AEI) President Arthur C. Brooks announced that Boris Johnson, member of Parliament for Uxbridge and South Ruislip in the United Kingdom and the former secretary of state for foreign and commonwealth affairs, will receive the Irving Kristol Award, the highest honor bestowed by AEI, on Thursday, September 13, 2018, in Washington, DC.
Johnson’s long and distinguished career in British politics includes serving as secretary of state for foreign and commonwealth affairs from July 2016 until July 2018; shadow minister for business, innovation, and skills; and mayor of London from 2008 to 2016. As mayor, he championed London’s financial sector; introduced a popular bicycle-sharing scheme, known colloquially as “Boris bikes”; and oversaw the hosting of the 2012 Summer Olympics. In 2016, Johnson became a prominent figure in the successful Vote Leave campaign to withdraw the United Kingdom from the European Union, leading today to Brexit.
Johnson has written several books, including “The Churchill Factor: How One Man Made History”(Riverhead Books, 2014), an examination of the life and legacy of Winston Churchill; “The Dream of Rome” (Harper Collins, 2006), a historical survey of the Roman Empire; “Seventy-Two Virgins” (Harper Collins, 2004), a novel; and “Lend Me Your Ears” (Harper Collins, 2003), a collection of essays.
AEI’s Irving Kristol Award is given annually to individuals who have made exceptional practical and intellectual contributions to improve government policy, social welfare, or political understanding. Established in 2002 in honor of AEI Senior Fellow Irving Kristol, the accolade replaced the Francis Boyer Award, which had been given for the previous 25 years. Previous recipients include Gerald Ford, Arthur F. Burns, Henry Kissinger, Ronald Reagan, Antonin Scalia, Dick Cheney, Alan Greenspan, Paul Ryan, and Benjamin Netanyahu. The ceremony and dinner will take place at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC.
This event is by invitation only. For additional information regarding the Irving Kristol Award or other media inquiries, please contact AEI Media Services at mediaservices@aei.org or 202.862.5829.
