FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Washington, DC (September 10, 2019) — American Enterprise Institute (AEI) President Robert Doar announced today that Paul Ryan, who served as Speaker of the US House of Representatives from October 2015 to January 2019, has joined AEI as a distinguished visiting fellow in the practice of public policy. He is also is a professor-of-the-practice at the University of Notre Dame, where he is teaching political science and economics. At AEI, Speaker Ryan will focus on opportunity, mobility, the social safety net, and entitlement reform.
Said Robert Doar, “Paul Ryan has always been among the most substantive and thoughtful of political leaders. He possesses a keen awareness of how politics works (and doesn’t work), a firm belief in the potential of all Americans, and an understanding of the limitations of the federal government. We are very glad that he will bring all of that to AEI.”
Added Daniel A. D’Aniello, chairman of the Board of Trustees at AEI, “I am delighted that Paul Ryan will be joining AEI. Paul was a policy innovator throughout his career in Congress, and we look forward to having him continue his important work at AEI. I know that he will bring his passion, experience, and knowledge to AEI, and we will be the better for it.”
During his tenure as the 54th Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Paul Ryan spearheaded efforts to reform the nation’s tax code, rebuild America’s national defense, expand domestic energy production, combat the opioid epidemic, reform the criminal justice system, and promote economic opportunity. He has also served as chairman of the House Ways and Means and chairman of the House Budget Committee, and for two decades he represented Wisconsin’s 1st Congressional District. In 2012, he was selected to serve as Gov. Mitt Romney’s vice-presidential running mate.
“The American Enterprise Institute has long been at the forefront of advancing ideas and solutions that expand freedom, opportunity, and individual liberty,” said Paul Ryan. “It is an honor to join AEI as a distinguished visiting fellow in the practice of public policy and help contribute to the amazing work of its scholars and staff. The American Enterprise Institute is needed now more than ever as conservatives debate and study the key policy issues of our day, and in the coming year, I am excited to add my own views and findings to the debate.”
