Summary
On Wednesday evening, AEI Resident Scholar Christina Hoff Sommers hosted author Mary Eberstadt to discuss Mrs. Eberstadt’s new book, “Primal Screams: How the Sexual Revolution Created Identity Politics” (Templeton Press, 2019).
Mrs. Eberstadt kicked off the event with an introduction of the book’s backstory and an explanation of the thesis that identity politics is rooted in the massive changes in family and social life following the sexual revolution. Mrs. Eberstadt and Dr. Sommers then delved deeper into the connection between the rise of identity politics and the loss of familial and religious connection. They also discussed the role that class, birth control, and modern technology have played in the development of identity politics.

Mary Eberstadt: “Primal Screams: How the Sexual Revolution Created Identity Politics”
In her new book “Primal Screams: How the Sexual Revolution Created Identity Politics” (Templeton Press, 2019), writer and social critic Mary Eberstadt argues that the extended family has always been the fundamental source of human identity. But as sexual liberation has contributed to the decline of the family, generations of people have been set adrift in society, unable to find purpose and belonging. Without the organic family, they have created identity-based tribes in which they can begin to build some sense of self. This has led to identity politics and a culture of perpetual outrage.
