Every country has a characteristic that defines it, such as a common language, ethnicity, or religion. In “Give Me Liberty: A History of America’s Exceptional Idea” (Basic Books, 2019), Richard Brookhiser argues that the characteristic defining the United States is an idea: liberty. Selecting 13 primary sources as his signposts, Mr. Brookhiser traces liberty’s evolution from the minutes of the Jamestown General Assembly to the Declaration of Independence, Gettysburg Address, Seneca Falls Declaration, and beyond, making the case that Americans have been most united by the common pursuit of liberty’s expansion and preservation.
Please join AEI for a discussion between AEI’s Yuval Levin and Mr. Brookhiser on how liberty has driven more than 400 years of American history and how it continues to drive Americans today.
