摘要 | Many countries have become locked into fossil-fuel dependent energy systems. A rapidly developing Indonesia could follow a similar path. A cost-effective option for diverging from this path is energy conservation. Significant savings can be achieved in the residential sector by changing energy user behaviors; or increasing energy efficiencies in appliances. Much of the literature on factors influencing energy saving has concentrated on Europe, North America, Australia, and Japan; more recent contributions have focused on East Asia. Few studies have looked at the ASEAN region. A study was conducted this year to fill that gap by analyzing which factors influenced willingness to save energy in Bogor, Indonesia. Survey data collected during the fall of 2015 was used to test hypotheses on four sets of potential determinants: 1) individual attributes; 2) social context; 3) knowledge levels; and 4) community participation. Results of an ordinal logit regression on 600 respondents in Bogor show “willingness to curtail energy consumption” were positively correlated with regular communication of the tangible local benefits from energy savings. Results also suggest that the benefits of savings should be communicated outside of the work place, possibly through neighborhood associations, television, newspapers and social media. Results further imply an interest in purchasing more efficient technologies among wealthier, educated individuals is offset by a greater reliance on these technologies, possibly explaining an apparent reluctance to engage in energy savings behavior from better off individuals. Additional research on the links between stated preferences and actual actions can help to better understand causal chain that results in energy savings. |
