FY2018 ALPS International Symposium was held with 278 participants from public offices, universities, research institutes, companies, and other organizations. RITE has been conducting a research project, shortly named as ALPS (ALternative Pathways toward Sustainable development and climate stabilization), as a subsidy project / entrusted project sponsored by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Japan. This research project is aiming at contributing to the international framework for green growth as well as to the development of global strategy for global warming. Specifically, studies of reviewing methods to increase effectiveness of the Paris Agreement, evaluation of mitigation for greenhouse gas emission reduction and adaptation methods, and a desirable combination of those methods to address long-term climate change risk are being conducted. Our comprehensive researches also include appropriate climate finance for green growth, as well as an analyses on future low-demand scenario with potential social changes where energy demand may decrease without sacrificing levels of utility brought by recent development of IoT, sharing economies and resulting innovation in energy demand side.

The Paris Agreement was adopted at the 21st Conference of Parties (COP21) of UNFCCC in December 2015, and entered into force in November 2016. The new international framework for almost all nations to promote emission reduction of greenhouse gas beyond 2020 was established, in which those nations have submitted their emission reduction targets as the nationally determined contributions (NDCs) to tackle climate change. In December 2018, fundamental agreement on detailed rules for implementing the Paris Agreement was reached at COP24. Along with them, domestic and international discussions on long-term - beyond 2050 - countermeasures against climate change are becoming active, in order for each nation to develop its long-term low greenhouse gas emission development strategies to submit to the United Nations by 2020.

Under recognition of various risks of climate change, in order to seek better perspectives toward long term and deep emissions reductions, FY2018 ALPS International Symposium was held to disseminate the research achievements of the project and also to present relevant lectures by eminent specialists in this field from both abroad and Japan. It was a valuable opportunity to consider harmonized achievement of economic growth and long-term deep emissions reduction based on the latest researches.
