WASHINGTON, March 28, 2012– The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is pleased to announce the creation of the Executive Council on Development. Formed to examine ways to build on the business community’s engagement in global development, this new Council is cochaired by former U.S. senator Thomas Daschle, business leader Carly Fiorina, Hyatt executive chairman Thomas Pritzker, and former U.S. representative Vin Weber. “We believe that in this environment of fiscal austerity and political debate there is a unique opportunity to change the conversation on development,” said John J. Hamre, CSIS president and CEO. “We will look to the Council to offer recommendations for an aspirational agenda focused on delivering healthier people, healthier communities, and healthier nations.” This effort follows on several months of work completed by CSIS on public-private partnerships, development finance, energy trends, local sourcing, agriculture, trade, and regional engagements in international development. The Council will release a report in 2013 with the findings from the group and will provide policy recommendations that will set the stage for a follow-on effort focused on implementation of those recommendations. The Council held its inaugural meeting in February, setting the stage for a yearlong study of how the U.S. government and the private sector—both on their own and in partnership—can support the economic success of developing countries. Council members from government, industry, and nongovernmental organizations discussed the changes in global capital flows, the impact of rising incomes in emerging economies, the importance of U.S. global engagement, and the power of private investment in developing countries. The Executive Council on Development will meet again in June. In the interim, CSIS will continue to hold meetings, conduct workshops, and engage in research relevant to the topics put forth by Council members. Council Cochairs Thomas A.
