Summary

Renewable capacity now comprises about a quarter of total global power-generating capacity and supplies close to 20% of global electricity, with developing countries’ share more than half of the world’s renewable energy. Over the course of the last five years, no other energy source has seen the growth rates of solar power. While solar has increased by more than 50%, and wind and biofuels by a full quarter, growth rates of all fossil fuels are in the low single digits, and nuclear’s growth is negative. This presentation puts the latest trends from the recently released REN21-Worldwatch 2011 Renewables Global Status Report in perspective, and explores what is possible and what is needed for solar energy to reach its full potential while emphasising the city and community initiatives sprouting everywhere.
