At the request of the government of Guatemala, 10 years after the civil war ended, the United Nations agreed to establish a mission that could help the country build stronger judicial institutions. The International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala, CICIG, has since 2007 worked together with the office of the Attorney General. Together they have uncovered cases of grand corruption that involve high ranking officials from every power of the state, including former presidents and ministers, and recently, also cases involving the current government.
It is important to understand the achievements and challenges of CICIG in order to improve and expand this effort, so it can be replicated internationally.
