The forced displacement of half of the Syrian population stands out as an unprecedented long-term effect of the Syrian conflict. While six million displaced Syrians are still in their home country, another six million have been forced to resettle in the states surrounding Syria. In this lecture Filippo Dionigi will analyse the responses of host states to Syrian displacement in Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq. On the basis of a process-tracing analysis based on fieldwork research in each of these countries, the lecture will propose a reconstruction of the dynamics of displacement in each host state. The presentation will then examine the main hypotheses that explain the reactions of host governments to a crisis that, for time being, is still far from an epilogue.
