The security situation in the Baltic Sea area has undergone significant changes over the years. Trust-building initiatives have been cancelled, the political rhetoric has turned more confrontational, military exercises have become more frequent and more extensive, and the build-up of new weapon-systems are being considered or are already underway. Overall that means that the Baltic Sea area, which had otherwise been characterized by peace and cooperation since the end of the Cold War, is now characterized by rising tensions. This seminar zooms in on the security challenges and foreign policy strategies of the Baltic States. Associate Professor Margarita Šešelgytė from Vilnius University analyzes new developments in the ongoing Russian strategy of interference in Lithuanian society as well as the recent emergence of covert activity from China. PhD Candidate Marijuš Antonovič, also from Vilnius University, will focus on the foreign policy strategies of the Baltic States balancing relations with the USA, relations with Germany and regional cooperation both among the Baltic States and with their closest neighbors.  The event will be followed by a reception marking the publication of 'Danish Foreign Policy Review 2019' (eds. Kristian Fischer and Hans Mouritzen). Apart from official articles by the Danish ministers of foreign affairs and defence, the Review includes three independent academic articles about aspects of Danish foreign policy: Denmark at war, Denmark's situation in Europe after Brexit, and Danish UN policy.
