Mia Bloom opens her recent book, Small Arms: Children and Terrorism, with the observation that ‘children in violent extremist movements, disparagingly referred to as “child terrorists”, are not born. Rather, they are made’. In recognizing them as victims of their situations, we begin the unmaking of them in that image and the reimagination of their humanity. This may for some of the children serve as a starting point for their return to their Western home countries or that of their parents, from camps described by Red Cross officials as ‘apocalyptic’ and ‘hell on earth’. At this seminar we will hear from Professor Mia Bloom of Georgia State University, a leading expert on this complex topic, as well as from Anders Ladekarl, Secretary General of the Danish Red Cross, who has experienced these camps first hand, and freelance journalist Nagieb Khaja, who has met Danish children currently held there.
