There are few sectors where ‘getting things done sustainably’ is as important as it is for the water sector. Using detailed case studies from Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America, the authors assess the role and potential of social entrepreneurship for the sustainable use of water. The chapter "Toilets before independence" focuses on the Social Entrepreneurship Initiative Ecotact that aims at “developing innovative answers to the growing environmental sanitation cry in Africa and globally”. Ecotact has tried out and implemented various elements of ecological sanitation for urban centres, slums and schools. Ecotact understands itself as a catalyst: it provides workable models that can be adopted by others.However, at this point it is too early to speak of a systematic and full implementation but there is plenty of space for potential improvement, which is especially important in the new settings such as slums and schools.
