In Gujarat, India, the author found that people had benefitted greatly from the Sadguru Water and Development Foundation social forestry project; farmers chose eucalyptus to plant on marginal private fields, which then provided a new income source, insurance against contingencies, timber for home use and self-sufficiency in fuel. The latter has the important side-effect of releasing large amounts of dung for use as a fertiliser.
