Reacting to today’s new appointments in Boris Johnson’s cabinet reshuffle, Sara Pantuliano, Chief Executive of the Overseas Development Institute, said:
“We welcome Anne-Marie Trevelyan’s appointment as International Development Secretary. As the Department’s fourth Secretary of State in nine months, it is imperative that Ms Trevelyan articulates a long-term and strategic vision for UK international cooperation that goes beyond aid.
We also welcome the appointment of her predecessor, Alok Sharma, as Business Secretary and President of COP26. Last month’s announcement that the government will end UK aid for coal mines and power plants was an overdue but welcome indication of his determination to act decisively to tackle the climate emergency.
This year’s UN climate talks taking place in Glasgow are arguably the most significant since the Paris Agreement was signed five years ago - and will be viewed as a test of post-Brexit Global Britain.
Both new ministers must work across government, particularly with the Foreign Office and Department for International Trade, to ensure a joined-up and effective approach to promoting sustainable development and confronting global challenges. We very much look forward to working with them.”
