What is Adaptation Futures 2020?\n\nThe Energy and Resources Institute will co-host the Adaptation Futures 2020 with the World Adaptation Science Programme (WASP), the sixth in the Adaptation Futures international conference series on global adaptation, in Delhi from April 27-30, 2020. Adaptation Futures is the flagship event of the World Adaptation Science Program, which is one of the four components of World Climate Programme (WCP) based on the World Meteorological Organisation Congress XVI Resolution18. Adaptation Futures, the premier event in the global adaptation spectrum is a unique platform to facilitate a dialogue towards action oriented solutions from a diverse range of stakeholders that includes academics, practitioners, scientists and policy makers across the world. Adaptation Futures 2020 will be the first Adaptation Futures conference to be held in Asia.\n\nWhat does it entail?\n\nThis will be an ideal opportunity to flag adaptation challenges in the Asian context, marked by diverse political, social, economic and cultural characteristics, and accelerating climate-related vulnerabilities. The Global Commission of Adaptation (GCA) guided by 30 commissioners and 17 convening countries was launched in October 2018, as part of which India is a convening country, with TERI as a research partner to the Commission. This Commission will launch its flagship report in the UN Climate Summit 2019 to elevate the political visibility of adaptation, following which 2020 will be declared globally as a year of action on adaptation. The year of action will culminate in the Global Adaptation Action Summit in October 2020, convened by the Netherlands. Thus Adaptation Futures 2020 proposed in India during April 27-31, 2020 is ideally placed to build on this momentum on adaptation generated by the GCA and contribute effectively to the Global Adaptation Action Summit.\n\nWhy Adaptation Futures in India?\n\nIndia due to its high reliance on climate sensitive sectors such as agriculture, water, and forestry for resources and livelihoods faces an urgent need for adapting to the risks posed by climate change. India has been making significant efforts over the years to bring adaptation issues to the forefront in the evolving global climate regime. The Government of India has also formulated mechanisms to integrate adaptation action as part of the developmental process under the National and State Action Plans on Climate Change. India along with other developing countries has been instrumental in putting forth a global goal of adaptation with an aim of enhancing adaptive strengthening resilience and reducing vulnerability under the Paris Climate Agreement. While adaptation requires local and/or national set of actions, there is a need for significant global cooperation in meeting the resource requirements of these countries. In this context, Adaptation Futures 2020 will be an ideal opportunity for India to give visibility to the adaptation requirements of developing countries, and generate a significant dialogue around actionable solutions.
