San Francisco's Community Justice Center Is Associated with Lower Rearrest Rates

• The probability of rearrest for those originally arrested for an eligible offense outside the Community Justice Center (CJC) catchment area increased over time, while the probability of rearrest for those originally arrested for an eligible offense inside the center's catchment area decreased over time.
• Using a differences-in differences research design that controlled for a number of arrestee-level factors (including criminal history), as well as month- and police district--level fixed effects, researchers estimate that those arrested for an eligible offense in the CJC catchment area after it opened were 8.9 percent to 10.3 percent less likely to be rearrested within one year.
• These findings support the hypothesis that the CJC reduces criminal recidivism and are robust to a number of sensitivity analyses.
