Key Findings

  • Break the Cycle's dating-violence prevention program improved Latino teens' knowledge of dating abuse and legal recourse, reduced their acceptance of female-on-male dating violence (but not male-on-female dating violence, whose acceptance was already low), and enhanced teens' perceptions about seeking help if they experience dating violence.
  • Latino teens experiencing problems with dating violence who seek help are most likely to turn to informal sources of support (family and peers). Consequently, peer mentor and counseling services are a promising avenue for providing help.
  • Intervention programs can educate teens about the importance of intervening when they witness an incident of violence or abuse among their friends.
