摘要Mobility is an essential need that has vigorously increased ever since the dawn of modern civilization. The indications for possible saturation are a few so that further increases testing the long-term sustainability can be expected. We show that a paradigm shift toward decarbonization, smaller automobiles and more public transport in conjunction with institutional innovations and some lifestyle changes could lead toward the achievement of virtually all goals of more sustainable mobility. There are essentially three ways to go about this fundamental change, namely to shift toward zero-carbon emissions sources such as renewables and nuclear, to capture carbon from fossil energy and store it and to drastically improve energy efficiencies by adopting advanced technologies and more sustainable lifestyles. In other words, a convergence of advanced technologies, new institutional settings and changing lifestyles would be required to achieve more sustainable mobility services and forms.
