摘要 | This article introduces a new term, conbiota, to describe the association that the nonliving environment has with life. Strong life–environment interactions are not evident in the common terminology of biotic and abiotic, which implies these two entities are fragmented and separate aspects coming together in discrete encounters. Conbiota refers to the processes and conditions that arise with life. We provide global and local examples where properties that are typically acknowledged as abiotic are, in fact, heavily influenced by the life processes that engage them. These include biotic processes that alter conditions of the land, air, and water. The biosphere's influence on the lithosphere, atmosphere, and hydrosphere is evident everywhere. |
