All credible pathways to net-zero emissions by 2050 include technologies to remove and permanently store carbon dioxide, including carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS).

Since the early 2000s, Canada has been at the forefront of CCUS technology and project development, with the Pembina Institute playing a key role as expert reviewer and, where appropriate, advocate for thoughtful investment and project development.

With an eye to developing a robust CCUS industry in Canada, the Pembina Institute and CMC Research Institutes, with support from CanmetENERGY, hosted a one-day expert workshop in September 2018 to assess the risks, opportunities and barriers to CCUS development and deployment in Canada, and to inform the action necessary for Canada to play a leadership role in the emergence of this trillion-dollar global industry.

Based on the economic opportunity and environmental imperative, the 2018 CCUS Workshop Report calls for a national network of CCUS stakeholders. This would help ensure consistent and stable political support, establish a strong positive narrative, and advance a national strategy for CCUS innovation and commercialization, including realistic objectives for sector development, domestic and international investment, and export growth.
