摘要 | Changing household consumption behavior into low-carbon consumption pattern has a lot of meanings for the national greenhouse gas emission reduction targets and for the green growth. Since households are not only the basic unit of consumption but have the great potential to reduce emissions, understanding consumer behavior is imperative to promote the sustainable consumption culture. However, there have been insufficient researches on the accurate consumption patterns. Furthermore, solely depending on a consumer survey, previous researches on the manner of living are likely to be biased in favor of a positive conclusion. In this context, a quantitative approach is necessary to investigate consumer behaviors objectively. This study analyzes CO2 emissions caused by household consumption activities and examines policy implications with the analysis model linking consumption behavior, energy, and GHG emissions. This is the second year study of three years plan, and based on the data from the first year study(2011) which focused on collecting basic information on spending behaviors. As a first step, we estimate direct CO2 emissions, and thereby CO2 emissions embodied in consumption categories, based on the Input-Output Table and the Energy Balance data. In particular, direct CO2 emissions in the process of generating electricity account for nearly half of total emissions while embodied emissions of electricity is much less than it. This is because the most CO2 of electricity are caused by the intermediate demands rather than by final consumption. Through the Structural Decomposition Analysis on the changes in emissions, it is found that the increase in CO2 on the period 2005 to 2009 is mainly due to the strong merchandise export growth and rises in the emission intensity, in particular, of the electricity and ferrous metals. This study also CO2 estimate emissions embodied in final categories. The export demands have caused the largest amount of CO2 in 2005 and 2009. When we consider capital investments as an input to the production system, however, the amount of CO2 emissions occurred by the household consumption exceed emissions by any other final demands. It shows the household expenditure plays a major role in Korea‘s carbon emission flows. |
