Ten for ten: Lessons for the next decade of education entrepreneurship

摘要Entrepreneurs have changed the way we think about education reform in the past decade—dramatically transforming what and how instructors teach, students learn, and parents engage. Ten years is a long time. Consider: In 2015, Khan Academy has become a household name by reaching more than 10 million students in 40 languages every month with its pithy YouTube videos. In 2005, YouTube had just launched. In 2015, New Orleans has become a hotbed for education innovation, a 100 percent charter school district home to some of the most ground-breaking innovations in charter schooling, teacher staffing, and entrepreneurship—ranging from Kickboard to Enriched Schools to 4.0 Schools. A decade ago, Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans—yet the disaster enabled a decade of wholesale system transformation. A decade ago, titans such as Pearson, Kaplan, and McGraw-Hill held a nearoligopoly over educational resources. Today, McGraw-Hill no longer calls itself a “publisher,” and the EdSurge Edtech Index lists over 1,500 products across an array of areas including teacher support, curriculum, and school operations—many of them just a few years old. The last decade has established that education entrepreneurs are worth investing in, can reach meaningful scale, and play a critical role in education reform. Yet we think education entrepreneurship is only in the first inning of its potential. This essay discusses what we have learned from the last decade—and what trends will transform the next ten years.
