Buy the book. “Matching Needs and Resources: Reforming the Federal Budget” by Murray L. Weidenbaum, Dan Larkins, and Philip N. Marcus continues AEI’s series of annual reviews of the federal budget. This volume is more wide-ranging than last year’s study. It includes, in addition to a review of the programmatic content of the new budget, a discussion of the fiscal policy that the budget proposes. It also examines three topics of intense debate at the present time: first, a proposal for removing the inequities created by the system of personal deductions in the federal income tax; second, an analysis of the effectiveness of wage-price controls during 1972 and the prospects of 1973; and third, the outlook for congressional budget reform and the presentation of a specific set of reform proposals. Murray L. Weidenbaum is Edward Mallinckrodt distinguished university professor at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, and an adjunct scholar at the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research. Dr. Weidenbaum served as assistant secretary of the treasury for economic policy during 1969–71 and as a fiscal economist with the Bureau of the Budget from 1949 to 1957. Dan Larkins is a staff economist with the American Enterprise Institute. Philip N. Marcus is a research associate in political science at the American Enterprise Institute. |
