Penniman, and Austin Ranney, examines national elections in 28 countries, including Israel, India, Venezuela, and Japan, as well as the Anglo-American and European democracies. In addition to analyzing underlying patterns, this volume catalogs such matters as electoral systems, candidate selection, party organization and ideology, campaign practices, media access, campaign financing, and voter turnout. It also traces the following themes: The long-term effects of electoral rules on the shape of political life The unique features of electoral politics in the United States The frequency with which elections decide major constitutional issues, alter party systems, or redirect policy The prevalence of the “new politics” of opinion research and media professionals. In addition to the editors, the contributors consist of 12 leading students of electoral politics from the United States, Britain, Canada, and the Netherlands: Ivor Crewe, Leon D. Epstein, Dennis Kavangh, Anthony King, Jeane J. Kirkpatrick, Arend Lijphart, Kayyam Zev Paltiel, Anthony Smith, and Donald E. Stokes. David Butler is a fellow of Nuffield College, Oxford, and director of the Nuffield series of studies of British general elections. Howard R. Penniman is general editor of the American Enterprise Institute’s “At the Polls” series and an election consultant to the American Broadcasting Company.
