Is Japan so successful because of the way its government cooperates with business? Should the United States follow the Japanese example?
Some authorities have credited Japanese trade associations for the extraordinarily cooperative relationships between its firms and between business and government. Some say that trade associations are critical to this cooperation and that we should reshape US institutions to make them more like the Japanese. Focusing on the steel and machine tool industries, the authors compare the influence of business in Japan and the United States on trade, competitiveness, research and development, manufacturing standards, and public policy.
Leonard H. Lynn is associate professor of management policy at Case Western Reserve University. Timothy J. McKeown is assistant professor of political science at the University of North Carolina.
