摘要As America celebrates the 100th birthday of President Ronald Reagan on February 6, we are reminded of the incredible impact he had upon our nation and the world. Although he was elected to office over three decades ago, we still often wonder what President Reagan would do to solve the challenges of today. Perhaps British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher said it best when she explained, “We have one beacon to guide us that Ronald Reagan never had. We have his example.” President Reagan believed in America. And he believed in the American people. In eight amazing years, he restored the economy, revived the American spirit and defeated the Soviet Union. Today we are faced with challenges at home and abroad. Yet we can find hope in Ronald Reagan’s legacy. He understood that the solutions do not lie in any one leader or political party. Rather, answers can be found by looking to the American people and working with the American people. As President Reagan said: “You can see heroes every day going in and out of factory gates … They’re individuals and families … Their patriotism is quiet, but deep. Their values sustain our national life.” Reagan too was an everyday hero whose life was defined by a deep patriotism. As an athlete, student, actor, governor and president, Ronald Reagan was committed to the values of hard work and determination that exemplify the American dream. He was not a career politician. In fact, he defined himself as a “citizen politician,” only entering politics at the age of 54 when he feared government was gaining too much power. One of the most transformational periods in Ronald Reagan’s life occurred at the end of his movie career when he accepted a job as spokesperson for General Electric. From 1954 until 1962, Reagan traveled throughout the United States speaking to thousands of hardworking Americans at General Electric plants across the country. Learning from and listening to the American people, Reagan gained invaluable experience that completed the transformation of the former FDR Democrat into a principled conservative. All in all he gave over 375 speeches to General Electric audiences during those eight years. Reagan’s message transcended partisan politics. His was a party of the American people. He wanted, sought and accepted help from every part of American society. In his farewell address from the Oval Office in 1989, President Reagan reminded Americans of what had been achieved together, “We did it. We weren’t just marking time. We made a difference. We made the city stronger. We made the city freer, and we left her in good hands. All in all, not bad, not bad at all.” This year, as we honor Ronald Reagan’s centennial birthday, let us remember his legacy — a beacon of light whose faith in the American people will continue to inspire generations to come.
