A companion to America’s Role in Asia: American Views, this report details Asian perspectives on the role of the United States in the Asia-Pacific region and offers counterpart views on security, trade, and political issues. Originating in dialogues among Asian policymakers and scholars in northeast, southeast, and south Asia, the report offers recommendations for U.S. policy and for improving U.S.-Asian relations in the twenty-first century. The candid assessments of the efficacy of U.S. policy, and of Asian public perceptions of the United States, offer an important “reality check” for U.S. policymakers and the American public.
