In January 2011, European Commission has positioned improving resource efficiency as one of its strategic priorities by publishing A resource-efficient Europe – Flagship initiative of the Europe 2020 Strategy. In September 2011, EC has released Roadmap for Resource Efficient Europe. To respond to these EC’s Initiative, the European Parliament Workshop on Resource Efficiency: Challenges and Best Practices was held in January 31st 2012, at European Parliament.

This workshop was organized by Committee for Environment, Health and Food Safety as a public hearing process by inviting experts of resource efficiency policies. Experts from DG Environment of European Commission, OECD, UNEP International Panel for Sustainable Resource Management, WBCSD, FoE and others are invited and participated in panel discussions.

From Japan, Dr. Yasuhiko Hotta, Deputy Director of SCP Group, IGES, was invited to the WS. He made a presentation titled “Resource Efficiency Policies in Japan” and pointed out the importance of setting indicators and targets for monitoring progress related to resource efficiency during panel discussion.
