Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) offers a new framework for achieving sustainable development in a targeted way. Goal 6 encapsulates a comprehensive set of targets for achieving sustainable water resources management. The Lower Mekong Basin (LMB) countries has been recommended as a potential case for basin wide implementation of the Goal 6. A readiness condition for implementation of Goal 6 and monitoring of the progress has been analysed. The study found that the counties, despite establishment of Mekong River Commission (MRC) for sustainable development of water resources in the LMB, are not yet ready for implementing and monitoring SDG6. Strengthening of the MRC to prioritize actions in areas of improving basic access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), improving efficiency on water utilization and discharge of wastewater, and sustainable transformation through conservation of water-related ecosystem, implementation of IWRM and promoting recycle and reuse could be a pragmatic strategy for basin wide implementation of Goal 6. It is hoped that the proposed recommendations could help in making progress in Goal 6 while addressing challenges, including the issue of diffuse pollution, such as sedimentation and nutrients deposition which is vital for aquatic ecosystem and farming communities of the Mekong floodplains.
