In 1992 in Bamako the municipality, small businesses, NGOs, and community-based organisations started collaborating on an urban waste management initiative in one of the city’s districts. This paper presents the approach followed, outlines aspects of the processes, methods, and tools used, and highlights important results and lessons learned. It also proposes a more systematic approach to sustainable development within the context of decentralisation, taking account of the need to provide basic social services and addresses issues related to natural resource management.
