More than 9 million Korean households use LPG, and Korea is ranked as the fifth largest LPG consuming country in the world, which imports more than 4.5 million tons of LPG annually.
The international market of LPG is greatly changing by the following aspects such as the rapid increase in LPG consumption in the new developing countries as China and India, the sharp increase in the international LPG price due to the change in LPG export pricing system in Saudi Arabia which exports LPG, etc.. In this kind of situation the stable supply of LPG is being considered as an important issue these days, Thus this study is performed to actively confront the change in the world market.
There are four main results of this study for the stable LPG supply which are summarized as the followings; First, it is needed to reduce the dependence of the imported LPG on Middle East that is over 90% for the preparation of the supply-shortages. Second, it is necessary to increase the domestic capacity of LPG receiving terminal and stockpile tank with the efforts from both private and public, because this could be useful as buffer in the case of the great increase in the international LPG price and domestic stable supply also could be kept in the case of the LPG supply-cut. Thirdly, it is wanted to independently secure the amount of LPG by participating in the overseas gas production plant. Finally, it is essential to increase the LPG storage in the consumer level with the expansion and supply of the LPG collecting equipment that is currently in propulsion.
Korea, which has suffered greatly from the last two oil crises, makes an political effort to strengthen the preparation for such situations.
