The Lisbon Treaty calls for a common European energy policy. In spite of paying lip-service to the European ideal for years, Germany decided alone on its future energy policy trajectory. Germany's nuclear phase-out and the build-up of renewable energy is the right approach. Nevertheless, many observers in neighboring countries regard it as idiosyncratic. In the coming months, Germany will not only have to explain its clean energy shift but also ensure it is compatible within Europe, and that Europe can follow the German example.
