The privatisation of water supply and distribution in Germany, in the context of the general discussion concerning the enhancement of competition and efficiency with regard to the liberalisation of public services, is increasingly finding a place on the agenda of policy-makers and interest groups. This report of the conference proceedings summarises the presentations given as well as the most important outcomes of the discussion at the International Symposium held on 20-21 November 2000 in Berlin.

The privatisation of water supply and distribution in Germany, in the context of the general discussion concerning the enhancement of competition and efficiency of public services, is increasingly finding a place on the political agenda. The implications for the environment play an prominent role with regard to these issues. Due to differences in political, hydrographic and historical requirements, the structure of the water economy varies throughout European countries. The experiences of these countries can help to enrich the discussion in Germany. It was against this background that some 130 regional and international experts from the fields of politics, economics and science met in Berlin on 20-21 November 2000. These experts convened in response to an invitation from the Germany Federal Ministry of the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety to exchange ideas and and knowledge as well as to discuss options for the development of the German water economy. This book contains the contributions, to the current state of debate in Germany in and other European countries, that were presented and discussed at the International Symposium "Environmental Aspects of the Privatisation of the Water Industry".
