In the International Commission for the Protection of the Rhine, the member Switzerland, France, Germany, Luxemburg, the Netherlands and the European Commission work cooperatively and successfully towards a sustainable development of the Rhine River. This presentation focused upon experience with transboundary control of pollution.

The presentation first highlights some of the guiding principles of European environmental legislation and how these are central to transboundary pollution control, most importantly the principle of subsidiarity. It then focuses upon the history of cooperation for the protection of the Rhine, the programmes initiated, success achieved and ongoing challenges.
