The goal of the European Environment Agency's European Topic Centre on Biological Diversity (ETC-BD) is to collect and monitor data on biodiversity as well as issues and ecological pressures related to biodiversity. This data is used to establish the state of Europe's ecosystems to support the assessment, development, and implementation of EU policies such as the Habitats Directive. Ecologic Institute is supporting the ETC-BD with data collection and assessment on ecosystem status and mapping, policy analysis, and monitoring. Ecologic Institute is also conducting multiple assessments to contribute to the European Environment Agency's assessment reports.

European Topic Centres are important instruments of European Environment Agency (EEA) in monitoring the environment in the EEA member countries, creating an international database and analysing the current state and future changes of the environment. The ETC on Biodiversity began in 2005, replacing the ETC on Nature Protection and Biodiversity. The current ETC-BD consortium began in 2014 and is active until 2018. The main tasks of the ETC-BD are:

• Supporting Nature legislation in implementation, reporting and assessments
• Improving data flows and streamlining data on species, habitats and sites for the Biodiversity Data Center
• Supporting content development for the Biodiversity Information System for Europe (BISE)
• Development and monitoring of biodiversity-related indicators
• Biodiversity and ecosystem assessments and networks
• ETC management and EIONET management

Ecologic Institute is part of the ETC-BD’s multidisciplinary expert consortium of 11 research institutes from across the EU. Within the ETC-BD, Ecologic Institute supports the EEA’s draft report on the status and trends in biodiversity in the EU and is responsible for data processing, literature reviews, and analysis. As a contribution to the State of the Environment 2015 (SOER 2015), Ecologic Institute will prepare scoping documents on ecosystem thresholds and tipping points as well as European biodiversity challenges in a global perspective. Ecologic Institute also coordinates contributions from ETCs to support an EEA report on  a biophysical baseline for ecosystem assessment at European level, and is responsible for management tasks within the research consortium.
