In this article, Emanuela Paoletti proposes a reflection on the relationship between putative changes in the international arena and evolving migration trends and policies in the Euro-Mediterranean region between January and September 2011.

To what extent have political upheavals across North Africa affected migration trends and policies in the Euro-Mediterranean context? And, how can we understand the relation between the gradual repositioning of international dynamics and broad migration trends between the European Union, its Member States, and individual North African countries?

The impact of international migrations on the relations between states has been the focus of an extensive body of research and literature over the past two decades (e.g. on border control, labor market issues, transnational ties, etc.). Less an object of attention is the impact on international relations of states' responses to such issues - readmission agreements, visa policies, expulsions, etc. This program proposes to produce a series of on-line publications and public seminars on this issue.
