South Africa held general elections in May 2019. The African National Congress (ANC) emerged victorious, but failed to win over a majority of registered voters. Cyril Ramaphosa, who became president following Jacob Zuma’s resignation in 2018, was reappointed. While South Africa’s post-apartheid democratic transition has been successful, there are concerns about its robustness. Is the ANC up to the challenges the country faces?
