Through the CHIPRA Quality Demonstration (2010-2015), CMS awarded $100 million to 18 state Medicaid agencies to evaluate promising ideas for improving the quality of children’s health care. This analysis examined the extent to which states sustained activities after the demonstration ended. We identified 115 potentially sustainable elements across the states, and analyzed data from state reports and key informant interviews to assess sustainment outcomes. We found that 56% of these elements were sustained, and that quality measure reporting and practice facilitation were more likely to be sustained than other activities, such as parent advisors to practices. Many demonstration states are now in a strong position to extend and spread specific strategies.
