Nine projects from around the world which combined conservation with development were outlined in this paper. Overall, projects that relied on high levels of policing were unsustainable while those which most thoroughly involved local residents were most successful, usually at sites where local institutions and rules governing natural resources were already in place. The author gave examples of several community ecotourism projects and a butterfly breeding project.
