County Capacity Support (2016)

WFP is supporting a number of county governments in Kenya to augment their capacity to manage and implement emergency preparedness and safety net programmes. This is being done both by providing technical assistance and by supporting access to funding. Highlights of this work for Baringo, Wajir, Marsabit and Samburu counties are given here.

The benefits - both direct and indirect - of investing in prevention and preparedness for emergencies relating to food security far outweigh the potential costs that would be incurred without such investment. Even in the absence of a disaster, investing in improving communities’ resilience to economic and environmental shocks can yield significant benefits. 

County Capacity Gaps and Needs Assessments (2015)

Prior to elaborating the capacity support programmes for Baringo, Marsabit, Samburu and Wajir counties, WFP needed a complete understanding of existing capacities and gaps.

The purpose of the capacity gaps and needs assessments was to identify the capacity needs of the four county governments and supportive institutions in designing, managing and implementing food security-related safety nets, preparedness and responses to emergencies and to recommend capacity development interventions for the identified needs.

These reports summarize the results of the assessments and form the basis of the ongoing specific capacity support programmes. The assessments will also form the baseline against which the results of the capacity support will be measured.
