Strategic Objective 1 - Crisis Response

Malawi hosts 38,000 refugees and asylum seekers from different conflict zones within Africa.  Every year, some communities face a season of high vulnerability to food and nutrition insecurity and vulnerable families slip deeper into poverty. 

WFP Malawi will provide cash and/or food transfers to shock-affected people vulnerable to seasonal and climatic shocks and refugees to meet their food requirements.  

Strategic Objective 2 - Shock-responsive & Social Protection

Malawi has high rates of vulnerability, with significant disparities between genders, urban and rural areas, and between regions, with the southern areas worst affected.

WFP Malawi will ensure that vulnerable populations, including school children in food-insecure areas, have access to safe and nutritious food all year by supporting national social protection systems to become increasingly shock-responsive and hunger- and nutrition-sensitive.

Strategic Objective 3 - Nutrition support

Malawi’s long-term food security and nutritional well-being is challenged by the continued dominance of subsistence farming, particularly given the growing population and limited land base.

WFP will provide chronic malnutrition and micronutrient deficiency prevention services to at-risk populations in targeted areas to improve their nutritional status in line with national targets.

Strategic Objective 4 - Resilience Building

In Malawi, most resilience-building efforts remain small-scale, localized, and short-term, lacking the coherence to consistently move affected populations on to a resilience path.

WFP Malawi will enhance resilience for smallholder producers and vulnerable populations by providing resilience-building support, education and systems-strengthening services.
