摘要 | I examine the effect of national lockdowns on Covid-19 infections and mortality, using evidence from the three national lockdowns introduced in England in 2020 and early 2021. My empirical strategy exploits variation across small local areas in ex ante exposure to lockdown as measured by the share of employment in occupations that cannot be done from home, require high proximity to others and were closed during lockdowns. I find that infection rates and mortality rates decreased by more in local areas with a larger share of employment in those occupations. Consistent with these results, I find that time spent at home increased by more in these areas during lockdowns. |
